Version 0.7: Prototype Overhaul!

Welcome back, Aqualanders! I have spent a lot of time working on this update as I have overhauled a LOT of the present game into this newest version! There is a ton of new content to share with you all and I highly recommend reading the entire post to get as much information as you can!

If you don't like reading, then here is the short version: the entire map has been changed, all animatronic models are now present in-game featuring animations, added new effects for the camera, and generally improved the "feeling" of this prototype.

The full list of changes is below!

  • The aquarium's layout has been completely overhauled with new geometry (still mostly greybox but it's a prototype after all)!
  • Added a power meter to the tablet! Using the cameras will drain the tablet's power over time- however, it will recharge while not in use. If the battery fully drains, it will recharge a lot slower and will be unusable until fully charged again.
  • Aronnax's mechanics have changed. Instead of looking into one room at a time, he will now sit in a giant tank in the center of the aquarium and will be "dormant". Aronnax will become more "agitated" as the player performs activities during the night- if the squid becomes too upset, he will begin patrolling his tank. Any player caught in the open during this time will face a gruesome fate...
  • Aronnax will now become active immediately on nights 3-5. On nights 4 and 5, he will be more aggressive earlier on in the night.
  • Weddell can/will move towards rooms in which the player has done things in recently. Stay on the move!
  • Improved the death screen significantly.
  • Added a small animation that plays when the notepad is shown/hidden.
  • Added Crusher! Replaced the red capsule with his model. Includes animations for each stage.
  • Added another stage in Crusher's movement pattern. This should make it easier to counter him if he moves multiple times in a row.
  • Gave Weddell a fitting jumpscare, unique to each room!
  • Added the Trio, complete with walking animations!
  • Aronnax has been given a model with temporary animations (no jumpscare as of yet).
  • The controls for moving  rooms has changed. Players will now use the "A" key to move to the room on the left and the "D" key to move to the room on the right.
  • Pressing Left Shift will now mute the nightly call.
  • The night will not begin until either the nightly call has ended or the call is skipped.
  • Added a static effect that plays when an animatronic moves rooms (or stages, in Crusher's case).
  • Replaced one of the objectives with a low-poly keypad, complete with a to and fro walking animation.
  • Edited the lighting once again. Some areas will be bright like the Kids area while others will be very dark, requiring you to use a flashlight.
  • The flashlight will no longer cast a shadow.
  • Updated the glass texture used on Aronnax's tank.
  • Re-recorded the voicemails with a new microphone. Still temporary, of course, but it sounds a lot better.
  • Overhauled the code responsible for the camera system which should result in less issues when utilizing the cameras.
  • New font has been applied to many various UI elements. I also fixed the timer in the top right from looking blurry.
  • Increased the time it takes to complete objectives in general.
  • Modified some stuff in the menu to help with scene transitions, including a loading screen.
  • Replaced some old code with new stuff. This should help increase performance overall.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where players could move rooms while looking at the cameras.
  • Attempted a fix for the broken camera screen. It will sometimes work as intended, sometimes not. I am still investigating this one.

This overhaul took quite some time and will require constant testing in order to fine tune certain aspects (i.e animatronic AI, lighting/atmosphere, etc) but I am very excited for the future of this project!

Until next update, Aqualanders!
